Public Service Spotlight: Evan Didier

On September 26, 2011, in Public Service Spotlight, by Saha Khaterzai

Evan Didier, a third year Law student, is being spotlighted for his dedication to the UVa Law School’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This student-run IRS organization provides free tax preparation services to lower-income households in Charlottesville.  VITA also works closely with the Madison House program CASH, which allows undergraduate students to contribute. Volunteers make sure that households receive all tax credits for which they qualify.

Evan has contributed over 260 hours of volunteer work and is currently the president of VITA at Virginia Law.  He manages VITA’s daily efforts as well as major long-term projects.   In addition, Evan created a website that saves time by allowing clients to book appointments online.  Evan says of future goals, “We hope to increase our visibility and brand awareness for our general client population, while specifically targeting those UVa employees who qualify for our free services.”  If a client were to use other preparation services, they could face fees ranging from $150 to over $300. Last year alone Evan estimates that VITA saved clients nearly $100,000 in tax preparation fees. Evan truly enjoys helping the community and hopes to have even more clients this year.
