Keeping UVA a Beautiful Place

It’s hard to figure out where are the right and wrong places to chalk and flyer.

Believe me, I know. As someone accustomed to publicity since year 1, I could tell you some pretty creative ways to advertise on grounds. From “ghost writing” on the chalk boards in class, shouting about my CIO’s event on the south part of the Lawn, to spray painting my own sheet to hang up in the Amphitheater. Sure we’ve made mistakes here and there…

But there are just some things we can’t do.

Check out this link, ever seen it before? https://policy.itc.virginia.edu/policy/policydisplay?id=PRM-008 It’s just a big ol’ list of do’s and dont’s. Well, rules are here for a reason. It’s time to learn them. For example:

  1. Posting. We can only post on the blue things, “kiosks,” outside. It’s frustrating, I know, but imagine the beautiful white columns of the colonnade dirtied by pink, blue, and yellow fliers and marred by leftover tape and (god forbid) thumb tacks. And in the dorms on the bare walls? That’s just a fire hazard.
  2. Chalking. Non-permanent sidewalk chalk can only be used on horizontal concrete or asphalt that is exposed to the rain. This reeeeeally irks me. Those that chalk on the brick century-old buildings should be taken around back and had a stern talking to. For one thing, CHALK DOES NOT JUST WASH OFF BRICK! It takes someone to actually scrub it off the walls. And don’t just think I’m talking about buildings, because I see you guys chalking all around the bricks in front of Clark Hall. That’s just not fair to the rest of us. That chalk has filled in the porous cracks of bricks and may take weeks to wash off.

There’s also some good info here too, like:

3. Facilities Management will remove all posting from kiosks once a week on Monday mornings before 9 a.m. This means that you can get all the good spots by posting fliers after 10AM on Mondays!

I love this University, and you should too.

Please follow the rules.
