Your Safety is the minimum promise to your family
Hey my name is Edward Jenkins and I am one of the co-chairs of the Student Council Safety and Wellness Committee. Our committee has been working since last May to get ready for this school year and we have several great initiatives designed to keep you as safe as possible, as well as a few that focus on the wellness aspect of student life.
The first thing that all first years should keep their eyes out for is SAFE day which will be September 25th, 12-2pm in the McCormick Quad.
SAFE Day offers all first years a chance to get to know the different safety related resources on grounds. The groups present will include the UVA police department, The office of emergency preparedness, and many more. All first years that attend and talk to the different groups will receive Arch’s ice cream and pizza. This is a great opportunity for first years and I encourage all of you to come out.
The Second initiative that our committee is doing is a football fitness night on the Thursday of Homecomings week. This year Student Council and UPC are teaming up to make Homecomings week an awesome time for students in order to hype everyone up for the game vs. Georgia Tech. Thursday, October 13th, the Safety and Wellness committee, along with the Athletic Affairs committee, will be hosting several different competitions ranging from a punting contest, to a 40 yr. dash, and many others. The winners of each event will win a variety of prizes. After all of the events are completed the Legislative Affairs committee will be hosting a BBQ that all students are invited too. This should be a great night to bolster school spirit and unify the student body. Look forward to this and many other great Homecomings events.
Other than these two events our committee is working on launching year long events. The first is going to be a free CPR certification class. Once a month students will be able to sign up and attend an approximately 2 hour long course and receive their CPR certification. Even if you have been certified before, most certifications expire in 2 years, and it is a good idea to stay up to date on the recent procedures.
This year Student Council wants to live by the slogan “your voice is our vision.” Please if you have any ideas regarding safety or wellness I urge you to contact myself, Arushi, or post them to speak up UVA, because believe it or not Student Council actually checks every single post.
