A Reflection on Fall 2012 for Legislative Affairs | UVA Student Council

Hello everyone! As we’re wrapping the semester up, Legislative Affairs wanted to reflect on all the events and projects we brought to fruition. With the 2012 Election, we had our work cut out for us. We set up a voter registration table manned by the Assistant City Registrar in the weeks leading up to the election, held a fun political trivia night on the Corner, and hosted an “I Promise to Vote” event on the Lawn. The “I Promise to Vote” event was one of our most successful new events this year, with the purpose of encouraging voter turnout for the election the next day. Participants signed a banner pledging to vote on their honor, received information about voting locations, and enjoyed food from Raising Canes. Unfortunately, our most well- publicized event, a political debate with the Whethermen, was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. However, Legislative Affairs looks forward to rescheduling this event next semester. Right now, our focus is on planning UVa Day in January in which our committee goes to Richmond to lobby on behalf of UVa’s student body.
