On November 19 at 6pm, the Academic Affairs committee is hosting a student-faculty dinner at Runk Dining Hall. The theme of the dinner is “Financial Crisis: Past, Pesent and Future”. Join us for a discussion between students and faculty from various academic departments over an informal dinner. Spots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Michael A. Aked
Director of UVa Investment Management Company
Michael is responsible for risk and portfolio management. He joined UVIMCO in July 2007. Prior to joining UVIMCO, Michael was a portfolio manager for SunSuper, an Australian Superannuation fund, and held investment positions in equity, fixed income and asset allocation at UBS Global Asset Management. Michael holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute. He received his BA from the University of Sydney and his MSc from the University of Chicago.
Professor of Commerce
Professor Broome’s expertise is in the areas of financial accounting and reporting, financial analysis, and professional examinations. He currently teaches undergraduate and graduate financial reporting and analysis courses at the McIntire School and at the Law School.
Professor Broome’s professional experience includes six years as executive director and trustee of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts (now the CFA Institute). For two years, he was chairman of the College for Financial Planning and on the board of directors of the College for Financial Planning—United Kingdom. He has also chaired the CPA Examination Review Board and served on the national CPA Board of Examiners, the Investment Analysis Standards Board, the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, and the Examinations Committee for the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. He has had visiting professor appointments at Duke University, The University of Texas at Austin, Lancaster University (United Kingdom), and Tulane University. Professor Broome currently chairs the Virginia Board of Accountancy, which regulates CPAs and public accounting firms in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Professor of Economics
Professor Burton received a B.A. degree and an M.A. degree in economics from Rice University and a Ph.D. degree in economics from Northwestern University. He currently teaches “Theory of Financial Market” and several seminar at UVa. He has also held various teaching positions at York College, Rice University and Cornell University, and has written and lectured extensively in the field of economics.
Professor Burton’s professional experience includes 10 years as a Senior Vice President at Smith Barney. He also served as a consultant of the American Stock Exchange from 1985 to 1986. From 1994 to 2001 and 2004 to present, he served as a trustee of the Commonwealth of Virginia Retirement System. Mr. Burton also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Investment Advisory Committee of the Virginia Retirement System for state and local employees of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and served as its Chairman from 1997 until March 2001. Mr. Burton also serves as a consultant to numerous companies on investment strategy and investment banking. From 1994 until 1995, Mr. Burton served as Senior Vice President, Managing Director and director of Interstate Johnson Lane, Incorporated, an investment banking firm, where he was in charge of the Corporate Finance and Public Finance Divisions. From 1987 to 1994, Mr. Burton served as President of Rothschild Financial Services, Incorporated (a subsidiary of Rothschild, Inc. of North America), an investment banking company headquartered in New York City that is involved in proprietary trading, securities lending and other investment activities. Mr. Burton has also served as a member of the Board of Capstar Hotel Company, a publicly-traded hotel company, and SNL Securities, a private securities data company.
Professor of International Relations
Professor Leblang is a Chair of the GAGE (Governing America in a Global Era) program and J. Wilson Newman Professor of Governance at the Miller Center of Public Affairs and Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia. A specialist in political economy, Leblang has served as a consultant to the International Monetary Fund, The Directorate of Finance and Economics of the European Commission, and the Department of Defense. He is co-author of Democratic Politics and Financial Markets: Pricing Politics (2006) and more than twenty-five journal articles in publications including The American Journal of Politics, International Organization, Economics and Politics, and the Journal of International Money and Finance. He has received research support from the National Science Foundation. Leblang has written on the politics of economic growth, the determinants of exchange rate policy, the causes of currency crises and the link between elections and economic expectations. At present he is working on two large projects. The first examines how sending countries “harness” the human and material resources of their diasporas while the second focuses on the relationship between labor, capital and trade policies over the last century.
Professor of Commerce
Mr. Maillet brings a strong general management and finance background to the McIntire School, as well as international expertise, having worked for nearly 20 years in the global financial services industry as an investment banker, business manager, and private equity investor.
Mr. Maillet spent the early part of his banking career in New York and San Francisco and then spent nearly 10 years living and working in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Singapore. His experience in M&A, public and private debt and equity financing, and general financial advisory spans a wide range of industries, including real estate, telecommunications, IT, financial services, energy, and transportation. In addition to his transaction experience, Mr. Maillet served as both Asia-Pacific COO and global IT business manager for a major financial institution, developing expertise in management, strategic planning, and business innovation.
