Energy Saving Computers! | UVA Student Council

Working in conjunction with James Kelly, supervisor of the Desktop Image Group, the Sustainability Committee of Student Council recently reevaluated the Desktop screen savers of the Alderman Library computers in order to reduce the University’s overall energy consumption, while maintaining the functionality and quick response time of the computers there.

Mr. Kelly helped Alex Wolz of the Sustainability Committee  come up with a plan to reduce the time it takes for the computer screens to go black from 1 hour to now only 30 minutes. Across the dozens of computers in Alderman library, this initiative will result in a large decrease in the library’s energy consumption. Mr. Kelly and colleagues are now looking into how to remotely turn off the computers at night; at present, the computers are left on during the night for various reasons.
