Hello everyone and welcome back to UVa! We hope you all had a great winter break. The Public Service Committee is ready to start the new semester with new initiatives.
Last semester, we had some big successes! We continued with the Public Service Spotlight and wrote about some incredible students. Please read about them here: http://www.uvastudentcouncil.com/public-service-spotlight/. We also revamped a past event, the CIO Meet and Greet. This initiative aims to connect service CIOs at the University so that they can network and find common interests. We renamed the event as “The Service Network” and changed the location to Open Grounds. Architecture school professor Bill Sherman moderated the event and did a wonderful job. More than 30 members from various CIOs participated.
We already have a few exciting ideas for this semester. First, we plan on hosting a dinner at the end of the year for all of the past Spotlighted students. This event will be a great way to show our appreciation for their dedication and service to the UVa and Charlottesville communities. Second, we are thinking of holding a follow up event to the Service Network. We would focus on connecting CIOs with community partners. This event would help service organizations better understand the needs of the Charlottesville community.
As always, we are still promoting the new Learning in Action website (www.virginia.edu/publicservice). The website is an all-in-one solution for public service and civic engagement at UVa. Our committee actively works on improving LIA with Julie Caruccio, the Director of Student Affairs Community Engagement.
Our committee is excited for this semester and we hope you guys are too! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any ideas or concerns. You can find our emails on the Student Council website. Have a great semester!
