StudCo News is a bi-monthly newsletter that goes out to the U.Va. community, intended to serve as a comprehensive resource for discovering opportunities, programs, events, and services around Grounds.
Dear Students;
Here’s a brief summary of everything in this message; you can find more info about each event in the paragraphs that follow.:
Hoos Connecting: Politics is a four part seminar series facilitating discussion between student leaders from political organizations at the University about ideas and issues related to the election. There is a Foreign Policy seminar on next Tuesday, October 23rd and a seminar on Public Perception of Politics on Tuesday, October 30th. We are taking questions from students on each topic, which should be emailed to to by Saturday at 11:59pm. Each seminar will be filmed and uploaded to the OpenGrounds and Student Council YouTube Channels where students can watch tthe video and participate in an online discussion. Please visit our website, or to view videos and get more information!
The Student Arts Committee welcomes funding proposals for the Independent Student Art Project Fund (ISAPF) from independent student artists for projects in the areas of Studio Art (painting, sculpture, print-making, etc.), music, creative writing or poetry, architectural design, film/video, dance, drama/performance art, and multi-media art.  Applications can be found here and are due on Wednesday, October 31 at 5pm.  Contact uvaisapf@gmail.comwith questions/concerns, and we look forward to your application!
Apply for the Off-Grounds Housing Scholarship! This scholarship is funded by the Off-Grounds Housing Office and will be awarded by the Student Council Scholarship Committee to students who need assistance with off-Grounds housing expenses. Recipients will be chosen in a name-blind manner based on demonstrated financial need, strength of their essay, academics, and extracurricular activities. The committee will award four (4) scholarships in the amount of $1000 per recipient. The application can be found here and is due Monday, November 5, 2012 at 11:59pm. Join us for Disabilities Awareness Week from to Tuesday, October 23, 2012 to Friday, October 26, 2012.  Wednesday: Come to the lawn and sign a pledge that says you will walk around grounds taking note of inaccessible areas and send your feeddback to! Receive a balloon as well!  Thursday: Please join us from 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 25 for a discussion about Friedrich’s Ataxia Awareness lead by Imran Khan.  Friday: Manicure for Muscular Dystrophy presents manicures in Newcomb 177 from 3:00-9:00pm on Friday, October 26th! All proceeds go to Muscular Dystrophy Association. Manicures are $5 and a French manicure is $7. Designs are an extra $2 per nail or all ten nails for $10!

StudCo is teaming up with the Batten Institute, UVA Innovations, and other organizations to co-sponsor the 2012 Darden Entrepreneurship Conference: Pathways to Entrepreneurship, happening on Nov 8 and 9 at Darden. Details and registration for the conference can be found here. Registration for students is free.
UVAirbus, a cheaper way to get home. Fall Break was a success, however we are always looking for more riders. Thanksgiving break tickets are currently available online or in the PAC. Follow this link to access more information.

The Fourth Year 5K will be held on November 10th at 8AM at Nameless Field.  The race is in memory of Leslie Baltz, a fourth year student who died after a day of heavy drinking on the day of the last home football game.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Leslie Baltz Foundation.  The Fourth Year 5K is on the list of 113 Things to Do Before You Graduate, and is open to ALL years and community members. Vonage and OpenGrounds invite UVA undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs to submit the most innovative ideas for the next generation of social messaging. Technical and non-technical submissions are welcome. Come to the Sept. 10 at 5pm Launch Event with the Vonage CEO on the Rotunda South Steps with a reception to follow at OpenGrounds.
