Don’t Sign It Campaign
Don’t Sign It Campaign
The Don’t Sign It campaign is a major initiative initiated in the 2008-2009 academic year by Council’s Building and Grounds committee. For several years, students have expressed concern about the practice of signing off-grounds leases as early as October and November of the fall semester. This practice, which has been brought on by misconceptions that there is a housing shortage in the UVA area, has put a great deal of pressure on students, particularly first years and transfer students.
By educating students about the state of off-grounds housing and the options that are available, the Don’t Sign It campaign aims to eliminate these misconceptions. The campaign aims to do this by reaching out to the student body as a whole (through advertising and merchandise), working with other student organizations, and by collaborating closely with University administrators to examine and alter existing deadlines for on-grounds housing. Additionally, the Don’t Sign It campaign and the Building and Grounds committee help to sponsor a housing fair each fall to share housing options with students.
