The Foxfield Races | UVA Student Council

Dear Students:

As you know, Charlottesville’s beloved Foxfield Races are around the corner. In order to make your day at the races safer and more hassle-free, Student Council has secured transportation options in addition to compiling safety and legal information for you.

We have been working with the administration and Yellow Cab to ensure that students have options to get to and from the event safely. The gates to the Foxfield Horse Races open at 9:00 AM, and the first race starts at 1:30 PM. We have communicated with Yellow Cab to coordinate 80 available cabs to circulate through Grounds on Saturday, April 29th.

I’ve included further information on transportation, safety, and your rights at the event below. I hope that you all have a fantastic and safe Foxfield – I look forward to seeing you there.

Transportation: If you are interested in taking a cab to the races, here’s what you need to know:

    1. Call 434-295-4131, go to, or download the Ride app available on the Apple and Google Play Store to request a ride the morning of the race. Rides are available on a first-come-first serve basis. Due to high demand, Yellow Cab will not be taking pre-bookings.

    2. Cabs will be accessible across Grounds, and will meet you at your given location.

    3. The average cost of a one-way ride to the races is $35.00 + gratuity but varies based on traffic and other conditions

    4. You can charge your ride to your UVA account by showing your student ID, requesting a Dean of Students Charge, and filling out a voucher. This applies throughout your time as a student in addition to April 29th.

  • If you vacate your vehicle prior to arriving in the designated cab drop off area at Foxfield, you can be ticketed by the police. Only under emergency circumstances should you exit your vehicle prior to arriving. This rule applies to all passengers in all forms of vehicles.

    1. Vehicles will be present at the conclusion of the races in the designated pick-up and drop-off areas on Foxfield grounds.

  • There is a $300.000 bodily discharge fee that applies to all passengers

  • Be sure to drink lots of water, wear sunscreen, and stay nourished throughout the day.

  • ADAPT’s safety resources can be found at their Safe Foxfield Races Campaign here.
