Last year was just the beginning.
Led by UVa alum Ishraga Eltahir, the Memorial for Enslaved Laborers Committee (MEL) soared to new heights during the previous Spring Semester. In just one year, MEL was successfully able to put on an ideas competition in which contestants would submit designs to commemorate the enslaved laborers who built this great University. After receiving some fantastic submissions, a judging panel composed of students, faculty and members of the Charlottesville community selected a first place winner.
Now, under the leadership of Annacrizelda Funtelar (who is AMAZING), the committee plans to continue the momentum by keeping the MEL topic alive. Look out Hoos, because in the near future, MEL will be having a Community Dialogue in which all students are invited to come out and learn more about the project. The Memorial for Enslaved Laborers Committee is indeed back!
