Happy first full week of classes! My name is Meghana Kaloji, and I’m the chair of the Safety & Wellness committee. Our goal is to listen to your safety & wellness concerns and implement initiatives that address them. To get started, we want to make sure you’re all aware of the new off-grounds blue light telephones that have been installed around 14th Street, Wertland, Virginia, and Gordon. The telephones connect to the 911 dispatcher, so pressing the button on any of them ensures a quick response from emergency personnel. These are ubiquitous around the dorms and libraries, but this represents the first time they’ve been installed off-grounds, and it’s a big step towards greater security in the Corner Area.
We’re also bringing back the Lighten Up Initiative, which seeks to improve lighting around off-grounds housing. Now that you’ve had your first few weekends in your new apartments, how do you feel about the lighting when you walk home in the dark? If you think it’s unsafe, fill out the Lighten Up application here!
We have great things planned for this year, but as always, we want to hear your concerns and ideas. Keep posting on SpeakUpUVa, and feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org – I’d love to hear from you!
